Both Din Djarin and Boba Fett have immediately benefitted from the Disney+ TV series model, while Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi made a triumphant return while being hunted by Darth Vader. However, with a whole raft of other Star Wars series on the way to Disney+, it’s time to look even farther forward and see what other in-universe characters have the potential to tell broader stories. Here are our picks for the Star Wars characters who deserve to have their own TV series on Disney+.
5. Yoda
Yoda is associated with wisdom and all that is good about the Jedi way. He foresaw that Anakin’s training would be dangerous. He set Luke on the path to defeating the Emperor. He understood that the prophecy had been misinterpreted by the Jedi. For all intents and purposes, Yoda has always been known as the Jedi Master of Jedi Masters. But little is known of his past. Despite his iconic name and figure, Yoda is still criminally underdeveloped in Star Wars lore. Perhaps that’s part of his mystique, but at the same time, wouldn’t it be great to finally get a fleshed-out series about the early life of this 900-year-old Grandmaster? A story about Yoda’s training and him taking his first steps toward becoming the character everybody instantly recognizes him as would be a fresh direction for the franchise on Disney+.
4. Qui-Gon Jinn
Of all the one-off characters in the Star Wars universe—excluding his brief cameo in Obi-Wan Kenobi—Qui-Gon Jinn is the one who elicits the strongest devotion from Star Wars fans. Liam Neeson embodied the qualities of a Jedi Master who thought for himself and often deviated from the path of the Jedi Council. It’s a kind of roguish defiance that he passed on to Obi-Wan. Seeing Qui-Gon Jinn on screen has always been a point of excitement for fans, many of whom waited ’til the dying seconds of Obi-Wan Kenobi to see the felled Jedi Master appear. Any Disney+ series about Qui-Gon Jinn would have to be set before the events of The Phantom Menace. In that case, the prospect of a younger Qui-Gon Jinn—possibly going through his training with Count Dooku—would be a fun one to consider. The problem is, how would they bring back Liam Neeson? He’s aged quite a bit since his character’s death in The Phantom Menace, and fans don’t want to see anyone else as the popular Jinn.
3. Mace Windu
Did Mace Windu survive the fall? Well, Samuel L. Jackson believes he did, and that’s all we need. So, why not have a Disney+ series about the bested Jedi Master as he goes into hiding after Order 66 and the fall of the Jedi? Samuel L. Jackson has gone on record as stating that he wants to come back to the role. Fans also want to see him come back. In theory, there’s no problem with bringing the return of Mace Windu. It’s just up to Disney and what they want to do with the character. It’s worth noting that the Mouse House has a good track record with giving fans what they want from the Star Wars franchise on Disney+. Of all the series likely to happen, this one has the most promise—perhaps hinging on how strongly the fans and Jackson push for it.
2. Darth Revan and Bastila Shan
The story of Darth Revan and Bastila Shan is one of the best stories in the Star Wars universe, and fans have fawned over it ever since the release of the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game. The 2003 classic had everything one could want from a Star Wars adventure. It felt fresh, the story was dynamite, and it shifted focus away from the Skywalker saga. But the hardest-hitting element came in the romance between Revan and Bastila. Bastila was a young Jedi Knight sent to kill Darth Revan. Due to her actions, Darth Revan eventually redeemed himself. The pair fell in love—something forbidden in the Jedi Order—as they spent time together trying to find the Star Forge. A Disney+ series that follows their lives after the events of their story in that game would be incredible to witness, but a series adaptation of the original 2003 story would be just a great.
1. Darth Plagueis the Wise
The very brief but incredibly tantalizing story of Darth Plagueis the Wise was famously told to Anakin Skywalker by Emperor Palpatine shortly before the execution of Order 66. Palpatine’s story tells us that he was the apprentice of Darth Plagueis and that the iconic Sith had discovered a way to cheat death. Seeing that story come to life on the screen would be a dream come true for hardcore Star Wars fans, who all know the story inside out and have even gone as far as creating their own fanfiction of it. What’s more, we’d get the chance to see a young Sheev Palpatine as Darth Plagueis’s apprentice in a series that could end with the murder of Plagueis and the start of Palpatine’s rule. It’s too juicy to ignore. Read next: The best books about the Star Wars universe
